Regulation 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable energy sources has defined the Guarantee Of Origin for the purpose of proving the share of energy produced from individual energy sources to final customers.
A guarantee of origin, with a standardized size of 1 MWh and a duration of one year after issuing, is an electronic document for the purpose of proving the origin of energy to the customer in such a way that a certain share of electricity used for its consumption is produced from a certain primary energy source.
Croatian energy market operator d.o.o. (HROTE) is responsible under the Electricity Market Act (Official Gazette 22/13, 102/15, 68/18 and 52/19) is responsible for issuing the Guarantees of Origin and for establishing and maintaining the register of Guarantees of Origin in Croatia.
In order to encourage production from renewable energy sources in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner, the Croatian Transmission System Operator d.o.o. (HOPS) procured guarantees of origin of electricity by participating in auctions through CROPEX's trading platform.
Since one guarantee of origin is issued for one MWh of electricity produced from renewable energy sources or high-efficiency cogeneration plants, their procurement and subsequent cancellation prove that the energy used for covering transmission system losses is produced from renewable energy sources and high-efficiency cogeneration plants. The purchase of guarantees of origin further stimulates production of renewable energy sources in Croatia.
Acquired and canceled guarantees of origin of electricity for covering losses in the transmission network of the Republic of Croatia:
- 2019 - 38,837 guarantees of origin of electricity were canceled
- 10% of the electricity used to cover losses in the transmission network in 2020 was produced from wind farms in the Republic of Croatia
- 2020 - 53,058 guarantees of origin of electricity were canceled
- 14.2% of the electricity used to cover losses in the transmission network in 2021 was produced from wind farms in the Republic of Croatia
