Through cooperation of numerous transmission system operators, ten years ago, on 10th October
2004, the reconnection of UCTE's 1st and 2nd synchronous zones, meaning grids of South East Europe and
the rest of Continental Europe, was successfully carried out.
With this project Europe became once
again a single continental transmission system which, due to war damages on the territory of Croatia and
Bosnia and Herzegovina for 13 years, was split into two zones.
Miroslav Mesić, president of HOPS
Management Board thanked to all participants of the reconnection, emphasizing that it was a non-everyday
venture coordinated from National Control Center in Zagreb. Therefore, the ceremony was an occasion to
present Acknowledgements to main participants operatively involved in the technically demanding project
of reconnection for their personal contribution.
Mr. Ivan Vrdoljak, Croatian Minister of Economy,
emphasized the importance of the reconnection as „a very demanding process where many Croatian and
international experts passed their exam.“ He pointed out that it was not only Croatian but also European
project, into which Croatia invested approximately 130 million Euros mainly for rebuilding transformer
substation Ernestinovo and associated 400 kV overhead transmission lines, and construction of
transformer substation Žerjavinec.
“Connecting the whole Continental Europe as one synchronized
electricity area, covering more than 520 millions of consumers, is a challenge for European Union and
each its member state, which has to ensure national energy stability and competitive prices for its
customers”, said minister Vrdoljak.
The president of Management Board of HEP, Perica Jukić, said that
the reconnection enabled development of electricity market, and in that way the technical preconditions
for electricity market liberalization in Europe were created.
Other speakers confirmed the value of
such venture for European electricity system in their inspirational speeches: Rudolf Baumann – Convenor
of ENTSO-E Regional Group Continental Europe, and Bente Hagem – Vice Chairperson of ENTSO-E
Board.
After presentations about significance and effects of the reconnection for Croatia and HOPS,
as well as for UCTE and ENTSO-E, presented by the president of Management Board of HOPS, Miroslav Mesić,
Ph.D., and Klaus Kleinekorte, Ph.D., member of ENTSO-E Board and managing director of Amprion GmbH,
programme ended with panel discussion named “10 years after and the way forward”, chaired by Damjan
Međimorec, ENTSO-E Vice President and Executive Office Director of HOPS, with Rudolf Baumann
(Switzerland), Jiri Feist (Czech Republic), Ivica Toljan (Croatia), Milan Jevšenak (Slovenia), Duško
Tubić (Serbia), and Zoltan Tihany (Hungary).
